New 81-Unit Littleton Community Eyes August Opening

Jeffco-based non-profit developer Stepping Stone Communities Inc. is targeting August for the opening of its Trailhead Community in Littleton, which aims to address the housing needs for adults with developmental disabilities. The community will comprise of 81 studio, one and two-bedroom homes. These residences are designed to provide safe, healthy, and affordable housing for individuals of different ages and abilities.

Barbara Ziegler, President of Stepping Stone Communities, said, “There is a desperate need for housing for populations that are underserved and largely ‘invisible’.” She mentions underserved middle income seniors and adults with developmental disabilities with aging caretakers as the primary recipients. In Colorado, there are more than 20,000 adults with developmental disabilities living with caretakers over 60, presenting a vital need for more housing options to facilitate these groups.

The Trailhead Community follows a cooperative model that encourages all its residents to partake in day-to-day responsibilities. Considering this, the building design includes multiple communal spaces for resident interactions, promoting community engagement. These communal areas feature a multimedia room, an arts and crafts studio, an outdoor courtyard, a game room with foosball, air hockey and shuffleboard, and a quiet room for cards and board games. The community houses a half-court sports court for residents to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Alongside shared spaces, every home of the community has a fully equipped kitchen. The residents are served three optional meals a day. These communal meals are prepared and served by the residents themselves, fostering a sense of togetherness.

Trailhead Community also integrates Universal Design features and advanced technology to prioritize the total independence and safety of residents. Trailhead’s design ensures every area of the building is easily accessible, eliminating the need for stairs or steps, even for roll-in showers. It offers optional audio and video connection to the front desk staff, ensuring a layer of additional security.

An on-site concierge staff provides 24/7 oversight for health and safety, organizes social events, coordinates meal preparation, and promotes engagement and mutual support. “Trailhead Community is committed to providing a holistic approach to housing by also facilitating access to necessary services and support,” says Program Manager Jeans Mobley. Thus, assisting residents to retain control over their lives along with the support needed to thrive.

James Harper, Director of Development, regards the Trailhead Community as more than just a housing project: it’s a significant step towards a positive social change. He said, “With its opening in August 2024, this community is set to make a positive impact on the lives of its residents and the community at large and provide a model for future projects around the country.”

Trailhead Community, located near Bowles and C470, currently has a limited number of studio and one-bedroom homes available for purchase.
