The Colorado School of Mines announced Carl Frick as its new graduate dean. Since 2021, Frick has worked as the department head of Mechanical Engineering at Colorado School of Mines, which is the institution’s largest academic department. Prior to Mines, he served as the department head of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Wyoming, where he joined the faculty in 2008.
In his new role beginning July 15, Frick will focus on graduate education and graduate student scholarship. His responsibilities will include creating an exceptional graduate student experience, growing non-thesis/professional master’s degrees and graduate certificates, and ensuring the academic quality of graduate programs.
Frick has had nine years of academic leadership at Mines and Wyoming. As the head of mechanical engineering at Mines, he led one of the largest mechanical engineering departments in the U.S. He has also overseen significant changes in the master’s degree curriculum and the launch of a new online master’s degree. At the University of Wyoming, Frick was accountable for the Mechanical and Energy Systems degree programs and initiated a new graduate-level assessment as part of a departmental strategic plan.
Frick obtained his PhD and bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Colorado Boulder and completed postdoctoral research at the Max Planck Institute in Stuttgart, Germany. He is the holder of four patents and co-founder of Impressio Tech, focused on developing liquid crystal elastomers for biomedical and safety applications.
As Graduate Dean, Frick will helm the Office of Graduate Studies, which offers academic and administrative support for Mines’ graduate programs and students. He will replace Tim Barbari, who has been in the position since 2020 and is moving to a full-time faculty role in the Chemical & Biological Engineering Department.
