Terumo BCT’ System to Enhance Efficiency for U.S. Blood Centers

Terumo Blood and Cell Technologies (Terumo BCT), based in Lakewood, has launched the Reveos Automated Blood Processing System in the United States, aimed at improving blood and platelet supply efficiency for blood centers. The system has been used globally for over a decade in more than 50 countries.

Carter BloodCare in Texas is set to implement Reveos for the manufacturing of platelets, red blood cells and plasma for transfusion. “Reveos is a revolutionary technology that automates whole blood processing,” said Chetan Makam, general manager, Global Blood Solutions, Terumo BCT. “By streamlining the process, it significantly improves efficiency and consistency compared to traditional manual methods used by U.S. blood centers.”

The Reveos system processes whole blood into its components—platelets, plasma and red blood cell concentrates—in a single centrifugation cycle, replacing the previous method that required more than 20 steps. This innovation is designed to maximize the yield of whole blood donations and address ongoing platelet shortages.

Blood Centers of America (BCA), which comprises over 50 independent blood centers nationwide, is the first U.S. entity to adopt Reveos. BCA and its members have prepared their labs and trained staff for this new technology. Carter BloodCare is the first BCA facility to integrate Reveos. “Reveos is a great fit because we’re interested in using technology to make blood donation centers more efficient,” said Bill Block, CEO and president of BCA. “It helps us keep up with the increasing need for blood while also making things more operationally efficient, and that in turn, should help ease some of the labor force pressures our centers are experiencing.”

The Reveos system integrates the manual steps of whole blood processing into an easier, automated workflow. This aims to help blood centers increase efficiency and manage staffing better by obtaining more blood products from the same number of donors. There are currently 785 Reveos devices operating in 57 countries across five continents, with software available in 17 languages.
