Mines Partners with Descartes Labs for Mineral Exploration

The Center to Advance the Science of Exploration to Reclamation in Mining (CASERM) at Colorado School of Mines in Golden has formed a partnership with Descartes Labs Government (DLG), which was recently acquired by EarthDaily Analytics. This collaboration aims to enhance mineral discovery through innovative remote sensing and geospatial data technologies.

CASERM researchers will gain rapid access to DLG’s Marigold and Iris software, which are designed to improve lithological mapping, mineral distribution analysis, advanced spectral mapping and lineament detection. These tools will facilitate the efficient identification of potential mineral deposits and monitoring of ground deformation, both vital for mining operations.

Marigold serves as an all-in-one exploration toolkit, allowing for prospectivity mapping on a global scale. CASERM plans to utilize Marigold to enhance exploration workflows, enabling quicker insights into surface and buried mineral deposits. Meanwhile, Iris, DLG’s InSAR-based ground deformation monitoring system, will help detect unusual ground movement at critical infrastructure sites, assisting with timely responses to potential risks.

“Descartes Labs Government’s choice of our research center as a partner to test and improve their Marigold platform for remote sensing is a testament to the caliber of faculty and students we have,” said Thomas Monecke, Mines professor of geology and geologic engineering and director of CASERM. “The partnership will significantly strengthen our research program in mineral exploration and mineral systems modeling.”

Through this collaboration, CASERM seeks to revolutionize the mining industry by integrating geospatial technologies that promote efficient and sustainable mining practices. This initiative enables mining companies to focus on sustainability, environmental impact and community engagement while driving growth and innovation in mineral exploration.

The partnership strengthens CASERM’s position in remote sensing and mineral exploration technologies, fostering innovation in the mining sector and addressing environmental challenges.

CASERM is recognized as one of the world’s largest research centers in the mining sector, part of a collaborative effort between Colorado School of Mines and Virginia Tech. It is supported by a consortium of mining and exploration companies, analytical instrumentation firms and federal agencies aiming to enhance the use of geoscience data across the mining value chain. CASERM is included in the National Science Foundation’s I-UCRC program.

Santa Fe, N.M.-based Descartes Labs Government is a wholly owned subsidiary of EarthDaily Analytics, offering AI-driven products and capabilities tested by various government organizations.
