Vladan Stevanovic has been named faculty lead for the Mines/NREL Nexus, a strategic partnership between the Colorado School of Mines and the U.S. Department of Energy National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). Stevanovic, an associate professor of metallurgical and materials engineering, has been part of the Mines faculty since 2015.
With a multidisciplinary background in materials science and a joint appointment with NREL since 2012, Stevanovic is poised to enhance the impact of the Mines/NREL collaboration. His new appointment took effect March 10.
In his role with Nexus, Stevanovic will spearhead collaborative research initiatives, strengthen partnerships between national labs and academics, and develop research innovations for energy and advanced technology solutions. His research focuses on computational materials physics and materials science, particularly in inorganic functional materials, materials discovery and design.
Stevanovic has published over 120 papers in top physics, chemistry and materials science journals, alongside two book chapters and two patents. He also teaches two undergraduate courses at Mines and leads a recognized research group in computational materials research.
He holds a PhD in theoretical solid-state physics from Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne in Switzerland and a master’s degree in theoretical physics from the University of Belgrade. His accolades include a Special Teaching Prize in 2008 from EPFL, the 2019 Colorado School of Mines Junior Research Excellence Award, and an NSF CAREER award.
