FirstBank Retains Top Spot in Local Deposit Rankings at $6.18B

The latest list of Banks by Deposits at Jefferson County Branches has been released, detailing how 24 financial institutions fared in 2024. The rankings, based on local deposit data as of June 30, were compiled using figures from the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp.

This year’s data shows a slight dip in local deposits across Jefferson County. Combined, the 24 ranked banks reported $17.74 billion in local deposits, down from $18.32 billion the previous year. However, total assets held by these institutions rose to $9.86 trillion, up from $9.79 trillion in 2023—a sign of overall financial growth despite local contractions.

Lakewood-based FirstBank remained at the top of the list with $6.18 billion in local deposits, maintaining a significant lead over its nearest competitors. Wells Fargo Bank followed with $3.39 billion, and JPMorgan Chase Bank came in third with $2.18 billion.

Several players made notable gains. Kimball, Neb.-based FirsTier Bank saw a 52.8% increase in Jefferson County deposits, rising from $32.79 million to $50.11 million. First Western Trust Bank, headquartered in Denver, experienced an even sharper uptick, with deposits jumping 127.71% to $31.88 million.

Two high-profile acquisitions also reshaped the regional banking environment in early 2025.

On Jan. 31, UMB Financial Corp. completed a $2 billion acquisition of HTLF, the Denver-based bank holding company formerly known as Heartland Financial USA Inc. The deal is the largest in UMB’s 111-year history and consolidates HTLF’s operations under the UMB brand.

Meanwhile, SouthState Corp. finalized its $2 billion acquisition of Independent Bank Group on Jan. 1. The transaction included the merger of Independent Bank into SouthState Bank, marking SouthState’s entry into the Colorado and Texas markets.

Absent from this year’s rankings is Fortis Bank, which held the No. 19 spot last year with $53.05 million in deposits. The bank closed its Lakewood branch sometime after last year’s reporting period.
