AAHA Updates Veterinary Accreditation Standards

For the first time in its 90-year history, the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA), based in Lakewood, has made a major update to its Standards of Accreditation.

Jessica Vogelsang, DVM and AAHA chief medical officer, emphasized the importance of aligning the standards with current practices in veterinary medicine. The standards have evolved with the industry, reflecting ongoing advancements in the field.

Over an 18-month period, AAHA reviewed more than 1,200 standards with the help of experts and feedback from various stakeholders. Nearly 400 standards were recommended for revision. The updates were designed to make the standards more relevant, support veterinary teams and maintain practical applicability.

AAHA’s Board of Directors approved more than 250 revisions, which include clarifying language, streamlining categories, and enhancing focuses on hospital operations and employee relations. While the procedures for accreditation and reaccreditation will remain the same, accredited hospitals can expect some reorganization and modernization of the standards.

The updated Standards of Accreditation will take effect in late 2026 and will be available for preview to members by the end of this year.
