Robert Johnston has been appointed as a senior research fellow at the Payne Institute for Public Policy at Colorado School of Mines. He will focus on the intersection of energy, natural resources, geopolitics, policy and markets.
Before joining the Payne Institute, Johnston served as the director of energy and natural resources at the University of Calgary School of Public Policy. He has previously held significant roles including senior director of research at the Center on Global Energy Policy at Columbia University and CEO of Eurasia Group’s Energy, Climate, and Resources practice from 2013 to 2018.
Johnston has also contributed as a counselor for the Canada-US Trade Council and co-chaired an initiative addressing the dual energy and climate policy challenge. He holds a PhD in international relations from American University, a master’s degree in political science from McMaster University, and a bachelor’s degree in political studies from Bishop’s University.
“I am excited to partner with the Payne Institute on their important work in energy and critical minerals, and to look for opportunities to build collaborative, impactful research on both sides of the border,” Johnston said.
The Payne Institute aims to provide scientific insights to influence public policy related to earth resources, energy and the environment, linking research expertise with issues of national security.
