Wheat Ridge City Council Approves New Parks Plan

The Wheat Ridge City Council has adopted the Parks and Recreation Pathway, a 10-year master plan to guide community investments and facilities through 2035. This plan, developed over an 18-month period with input from thousands of residents, replaces the 2015 Parks and Recreation Master Plan.

This Pathway aims to create vibrant, inclusive, and sustainable parks and recreational opportunities in Wheat Ridge. It outlines seven strategic priorities designed to strengthen connections throughout the city and improve the quality of life for residents of all ages. “This plan represents the next step in Wheat Ridge’s legacy of community wellness,” said Mayor Bud Starker.

The planning process began in 2024 with a contract awarded to BerryDunn, in collaboration with the Parks and Recreation Department and community stakeholders. Public participation played a key role, with over 2,000 residents contributing ideas via surveys, workshops, and community events. “This plan is truly rooted in community,” said Parks and Recreation Director Karen O’Donnell.

The seven priorities outlined in the Parks and Recreation Pathway include: reinvesting in aging facilities, expanding recreation programs, advancing sustainable aquatics access, strengthening trail connectivity, increasing equity and inclusion, pursuing partnerships, and planning for long-term sustainability.

Wheat Ridge City Manager Patrick Goff stated, “The City Plan sets the foundation for how Wheat Ridge will grow, and the Parks and Recreation Pathway brings that vision to life in our parks, trails, and recreation spaces.” The new plan complements the recently adopted City Plan, providing a unified vision for the future of Wheat Ridge.
