Lakewood City Council Advances Community Resource Project

Mayor Wendi Strom and the Lakewood City Council have clarified details regarding a partnership with Jeffco Public Schools and The Action Center. The Action Center, a well-established nonprofit, provides critical services such as food, clothing, and financial assistance to 300 households daily.

The proposed project aims to transform the former Emory Elementary site into a family resource hub that would offer a range of services, including workforce training and youth programs. Council members emphasized that this initiative is vital for supporting families amid ongoing financial challenges. “Enabling working families to access so many critical services in one location will make a big difference,” they stated.

City officials confirmed that the Emory campus will not include overnight shelters or housing. The financial arrangements involve a $4 million purchase for the 17-acre property, consisting of $3 million for open space and $1 million for the school site, which will be resold to The Action Center. Additionally, Lakewood plans to purchase The Action Center’s facility for $4 million, a strategic investment in affordable housing options.

Historically, Lakewood has collaborated with local schools, including the transition of property ownership from Jeffco Schools to maintain public access to community assets. The City Council voted unanimously, 11 to 0, to approve necessary ordinances after a temporary injunction was lifted by a judge.

Pending approval from Jeffco Public Schools, the City is optimistic about advancing this significant project, which aims to benefit many Lakewood families.
