The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) and contractor Hamon Infrastructure have finished installing 3.5 miles of new noise walls along Interstate 70 between Pecos Street and I-76, an area crossing Denver and Jefferson counties. This project is part of a two-phase initiative. The first phase replaced one mile of walls between Tennyson Street and Lowell Boulevard in 2022.
Construction of the second phase began in March 2024, replacing old timber structures with concrete panels. The team also modernized guardrails and concrete barriers and made landscape improvements. This phase was expected to finish in the fall of 2026, but crews completed the project nearly a year early.
“Delivering this project phase ahead of schedule reflects the hard work and efficiency of our teams. For the communities along this I-70 corridor, these new concrete walls mean relief from noise pollution and the confidence of a more stable safety barrier,” said Jessica Myklebust, Regional Transportation Director of Region 1.
While construction is largely complete, final cleanup will continue in December, with further landscaping efforts scheduled for spring 2026. There are no significant impacts anticipated for the traveling public.
The new noise walls will reduce traffic-related noise for those living and working along the I-70 corridor and enhance the overall appearance of the area. Concrete walls offer greater durability compared to the previous timber structures, ensuring more effective noise mitigation in the long term.
