International lubricant brand Castrol has released a new documentary titled Drive Me to the Moon, created in collaboration with Lunar Outpost, a company headquartered in Golden that specializes in planetary mobility and in-space infrastructure. The film offers an in-depth look at the engineering behind next-generation mobility on the Moon.
This documentary is the result of a three-year partnership between Castrol and Lunar Outpost, which achieved significant milestones with the Lunar Voyage 1 (LV1) mission. LV1 marked the delivery of the first commercial rover to the Moon and the first rover to reach the lunar South Pole. Castrol contributed technical expertise and provided space-grade lubricants for the mission’s operations.
Drive Me to the Moon follows the journey of LV1 from testing to its lunar landing, showcasing the challenges faced in a harsh environment. Featuring interviews with industry experts, the film illustrates how the collaboration between science and industry is expanding the possibilities of space exploration.
The documentary premiered in Houston at a time when lunar exploration is gaining momentum, particularly with NASA’s Artemis program aiming to return astronauts to the Moon after over 50 years. Following the screening, a panel discussion delved into the making of the film and the future of commercial space exploration.
Justin Cyrus, CEO of Lunar Outpost, emphasized the importance of the partnership with Castrol, stating that it has been critical for enhancing their Mission Control capabilities and preparing for future lunar exploration endeavors. The documentary is set to be available on YouTube in February 2026.
