Navy Awards Lockheed Martin $18.8M for Trident II Missile Modernization

The U.S. Department of War has announced an $18,867,588 contract modification awarded to Lockheed Martin Space for the Trident II (D5) Life Extension 2 Strategic Systems Programs (SSP) Alteration. This funding supports the Advanced Design and Development efforts necessary to modernize the nation’s sea-based nuclear deterrent.

A significant portion of this technical work will take place in Colorado. While the contract originated from Lockheed Martin’s Florida division, the Department of Defense confirmed that 17% of the project—totaling over $3.2 million—will be performed in Denver. This highlights the ongoing importance of Lockheed Martin’s major operations in Jefferson County, where the company’s Waterton Canyon campus serves as a primary hub for aerospace and defense engineering.

The project is distributed across several key specialized sites, including:

  • Huntsville, Alabama (30%)
  • Denver, Colorado (17%)
  • Gilroy and Folsom, California (24% combined)
  • McDonald, Tennessee (8%)
  • Palo Alto and Sunnyvale, California (10% combined)
  • Lanham, Maryland (5%)
  • Titusville, Florida (3%)
  • Various other locations (3%)

The contract was awarded on a sole-source basis by the Strategic Systems Programs office in Washington, D.C., using fiscal 2026 Navy weapons procurement funds. Work on this phase of the Trident II modernization is expected to reach completion by August 30, 2030.
