Tuition stacks up at largest Jeffco colleges

The tuition costs of the three top colleges and universities (based on enrollment) in Jefferson County have seen various changes over the past five years. Three institutions included in the data are Colorado Christian University, Colorado School of Mines, and Red Rocks Community College.

At Colorado Christian University, the tuition for out-of-state students has seen a steady rise. The fees were $22,718 in 2018, $23,502 in 2019, $24,160 in 2020, $24,503 in 2021, and $25,751 in 2022.

Meanwhile, the Colorado School of Mines has seen a similar increase, albeit at a higher tuition rate. The data shows tuition costs as $36,270 in 2018, $37,350 in 2019 and 2020, $38,460 in 2021, and $39,600 in 2022.

At Red Rocks Community College, the tuition costs have also gradually increased, starting from a base of $14,662 in 2018, moving to $14,661 in 2019, $15,102 in 2020 and 2021, and eventually hitting $15,408 in 2022.

The peer average tuition – that is, the average tuition costs among the listed institutions – also increased over the five-year period. The costs were $19,304.33 in 2018, $19,782.17 in 2019, $20,011 in 2020, $20,680 in 2021, and $21,415 in 2022.

Reviewing the same three schools’ student populations over the past five years, Colorado School of Mines surprassed the enrollment of Red Rocks Community College in 2020 for the first time in the five year period beginning in 2017.

In 2017, Colorado Christian University had a student population of 7,398 which has seen a consistent rise over the last five years. In 2018, the number slightly increased to 7,625, followed by slightly decreasing to 7,587 in 2019, but then started to significantly rise to 7,839 in 2020, and 8,472 in 2021. The figure further rose to 8,964 students in 2022.

Further, the Colorado School of Mines had a student population of 6,209 in the year 2017 and it rose to 6,325 in 2018. This number grew in 2019 to 6,628 and reached 6,744 in 2020. The School of Mines continued the growth trend with 7,187 students in 2021, and finally reached 7,403 in 2022.

Observing the trend at Red Rocks Community College showed a different pattern. In 2017 the number sat at 7,355, rose slightly to 7,384 in 2018, decreased to 7,008 in 2019, and decreased considerably to 6,029 in 2020. This number remained consistent in 2021, with 6,035 students, but increased moderately to 6,470 in 2022.
