DMC Global Inc. (Nasdaq: BOOM) has elected Simon Bates as an independent director to its board. With almost three decades of leadership experience in the building products sector, Bates’ appointment increases the number of directors on DMC’s board to eight. David Aldous, DMC Global’s chairman, said Bates’ experience and expertise in the building products industry “will be invaluable.”
Bates served as CEO of Argos North America, a U.S. cement and ready-mix concrete producer, from October 2022 to January 2024. His tenure saw the company being sold to Summit Materials. Prior to Argos, he was president, CEO and director of GCP Applied Technologies Inc. from October 2020 until its acquisition by Saint-Gobain in October 2022. GCP is renowned as a leading global provider of specialty construction chemicals and building materials.
Bates’ leadership experience extends further, having been president of the Infrastructure Products Group, a section of CRH plc, between April 2017 and October 2020. Currently, he serves as a director on the board of U.S. Silica Holdings, Inc., a producer of commercial silica for use in various industries, including oil and gas.
Bates’ appointment to DMC’s board was part of a cooperation agreement made on March 14, 2024, involving DMC’s board and Bradley L. Radoff and his affiliate. The agreement required the appointment of an independent director experienced in the building products sector. Bates will join the board’s Corporate Governance and Nominating Committee, and its Compensation Committee.
Bates’ academic credentials include a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of York, England along with post-graduate degrees in accounting and finance from the University of Manchester, and a post-graduate degree in marketing from the University of Salford.
