Four major sports teams — Arsenal, Los Angeles Rams, Denver Nuggets and Colorado Avalanche — have partnered to launch the “Green Action League,” marking the largest fan-driven sustainability campaign in sports history. This tournament invites fans from European football, American football, basketball and ice hockey to compete for the title of “greenest fans.”
The event, sponsored by Westminster-based Ball Corp. and hosted on the Planet League platform, will run from Nov. 11 to Dec. 1. Participants can earn “green points” through various sustainable activities, encouraging sports fans worldwide to adopt environmentally friendly habits.
“The Green Action League is all about how small, simple actions can add up to a massive impact,” said Tom Gribbin, founder, Planet League. “Fans don’t need to overhaul their lives; just recycling an aluminum can, opting for a meatless meal or picking up litter can score points and help their team lead the way in sustainability.” This initiative represents a unique collaboration between Ball Corp. (NYSE: BALL) and Kroenke Sports & Entertainment (KSE), aiming to enhance sustainability in sports through improved aluminum recycling and environmentally friendly fan experiences.
“We are excited to partner with KSE, one of the world’s leading sports ownership groups, and Planet League to encourage sports fans around the globe to make more sustainable choices through everyday actions,” said Mike Kelley, director of strategic partnership at Ball Corp.
Fans of the participating teams can compete individually for the title of “greenest fan” and collectively to earn the most “green points.” Participants can sign up on their team’s respective platforms and score points by taking sustainable actions such as recycling aluminum cans, switching to plant-based meals and participating in community litter clean-ups.
Each sustainable activity earns points, and top performers will receive exclusive prizes, including game tickets and signed merchandise. The focus on aluminum packaging highlights its sustainability, with 75% of all aluminum ever produced still in use. Aluminum beverage cans can be recycled and return to store shelves in as little as 60 days.
