Terumo BCT Launches Local Manufacturing in China

Terumo Blood and Cell Technologies (Terumo BCT) has announced a strategic partnership with Terumo Medical Products (Hangzhou) Co. Ltd., investing in a production facility in Qiantang District, Hangzhou. This initiative aims to provide locally made medical products for the Chinese market, including devices used to collect and separate blood and cells.

The launch ceremony, themed “Unlocking a New Chapter in China, Led by Purpose, Built on Quality,” marks a significant advance in Terumo BCT’s localization strategy. The company is set to manufacture products such as the Trima Accel Automated Blood Collection System and disposable sets, as well as the Spectra Optia Apheresis System and disposable sets, which have gained acceptance among blood centers, hospitals, researchers and private medical practices in China.

Terumo BCT, founded in 1965 and based in Lakewood, provides solutions in blood component collection and processing, therapeutic apheresis and cell therapy technology. The company serves customers in more than 150 countries and operates several manufacturing sites and research and development centers.

The partnership with Terumo Medical Products signifies the completion of the first phase of Terumo BCT’s localization strategy, which aims to establish a stable and efficient local supply chain for “made-in-China” medical products. The TMPH facility has received certifications for its compliance with international standards, ensuring high-quality production.

“China is a pivotal market for Terumo BCT and the entire Terumo Group,” said Antoinette Gawin, president and CEO of Terumo BCT. “With our ‘in China, for China’ approach, we are committed to our long-term growth here.” The company plans to invest $15 million by 2025 to expand its localized manufacturing and enhance customer service.

Since entering the Chinese market over 20 years ago, Terumo BCT has supplied nearly 4,000 medical devices and continues to expand its business across the country.
