Terumo Blood and Cell Technologies (Terumo BCT) announced today that Carter BloodCare is the first U.S. adopter of its Reveos Automated Blood Processing System and Lumia Software Platform. This implementation aims to meet the needs of Texas patients for platelets, plasma and red blood cells.
Carter BloodCare, one of the largest blood centers in Texas, is now using Reveos to automate the separation of whole blood into essential components. The system has been utilized globally for over a decade in more than 50 countries, enhancing efficiency for platelet supply. Traditionally, whole blood donations, typically collected at community blood drives and blood centers, were separated into their respective components using a centrifuge, involving a labor-intensive process of over 20 steps. Reveos is the first automated device in the U.S. engineered to process whole blood into all three components in a single centrifugation cycle, addressing the issues of platelet shortages and the need for more efficient blood processing methods.
Carter BloodCare has previously employed Lakewood-based Terumo BCT’s Trima Accel Automated Blood Collection System for apheresis. Now, with both Trima Accel and Reveos, the organization has two automated methods available to produce platelets, further alleviating U.S. platelet shortages. The addition of Reveos positions Carter BloodCare to sustain blood supply in northern, central, and eastern Texas, despite challenges like those faced during shortages in 2024. Dr. Barbara Bryant, president and CEO of Carter BloodCare, stated, “The integration of Reveos has not only streamlined our platelet production process but also allowed us to automate the production of other blood components, including red blood cells and plasma.” She added, “This advancement significantly enhances our ability to meet the growing demand for blood products while ensuring the highest standards of quality and safety.”
The Reveos Automated Blood Processing System integrates the manual steps of whole blood processing and aims to improve platelet yield and quality. It enhances operational efficiency by reducing hands-on manual steps, allowing staff to focus on other critical tasks. The Lumia Software Platform aids blood centers in optimizing their operations through digital data management.
Carter BloodCare serves more than 200 medical facilities in 57 counties of North, Central and East Texas. As one of the largest blood programs in Texas, it delivers over 440,000 blood products annually. Terumo BCT develops medical technology solutions that assist in the collection and preparation of blood and cells to address various diseases and conditions.
