Natural Grocers Expands Standards for Household Cleaning Products

Natural Grocers, the family-operated organic and natural grocery retailer, has reported expanded product standards for household cleaning products. The updates are aimed at enhancing ingredient transparency and aligning with the latest research on human and environmental health.

Natural Grocers first introduced household cleaning standards in 2016, offering alternatives to conventional products. The new standards take into account scientific findings regarding the effects of certain ingredients on indoor air quality and overall well-being. The company now mandates that every brand it sells provide a complete ingredient list on packaging, a requirement not upheld by federal regulations.

The updated list of prohibited ingredients has increased to over 100. In addition to previously banned substances like phosphates and synthetic fragrances, the new standards now include:

  • Formaldehyde donors
  • Phthalates
  • Parabens
  • Ethanolamines
  • Glycol ethers
  • Quaternary ammonium compounds

Raquel Isely, vice president of marketing at Natural Grocers, said, “We’ve always believed that cleaning your home shouldn’t come at the expense of your health—or the environment. That’s why we’re committed to providing our customers with safe, sustainable choices, and making it easy for them to understand exactly what’s in the products they use every day. These updated standards help our customers make confident, informed decisions, whether they’re shopping for dish soap, fabric softener or multi-surface cleaner.”

Natural Grocers is also focused on ethically sourced and sustainably produced products, including those with planet-friendly packaging. Many Natural Grocers Brand Household Cleaning Products use sugar cane-based or 100% post-consumer recycled plastic, while other options utilize recyclable paper and steel containers.

Natural Grocers, headquartered in Lakewood, operates 169 stores across 21 states.
