Lakewood has been named a climate action leader for the second consecutive year, joining a select group of cities recognized for their efforts in sustainability and environmental transparency. The city earned a spot on the 2024 CDP A List, a global ranking that includes only 112 cities worldwide, with 29 from the U.S.
This recognition reflects Lakewood’s commitment to climate innovation and infrastructure investment. To achieve an A grade, cities are required to publicly disclose their efforts and meet stringent criteria like maintaining a citywide emissions inventory and developing a climate action plan.
“I am extremely proud that Lakewood is among this prestigious list for the second consecutive year,” said Lakewood Mayor Wendi Strom. “It highlights the depth of our commitment to ensuring that sustainability plays a central role in Lakewood’s ongoing story.”
Recently, Governor Jared Polis acknowledged Lakewood’s achievement, noting Colorado is one of only two states on the A list. Key projects contributing to this recognition include:
- Climate Hazard & Social Vulnerability Study: The city has assessed climate-related hazards and identified priorities such as extreme weather events, incorporating social factors for targeted community support.
- Solar Installation at Whitlock Recreation Center: Lakewood is constructing its first solar project, which is expected to offset 100 percent of the center’s electricity use.
- Sustainable Development Standards: Updated standards aim to promote greenhouse gas reduction through measures like all-electric buildings and electric vehicle charging.
- Greenhouse Gas Emissions Inventory: The city is updating its emissions inventory and creating its first municipal operations inventory for future decarbonization efforts.
