Littleton Police Chief Announces Retirement

The Littleton Police Department announced the retirement of Police Chief Doug Stephens, effective April 3, 2026. Chief Stephens has had a distinguished career in law enforcement lasting over three decades, noted for his leadership and community impact.

Stephens’ 2024 annual salary at the police department was $217,422. He ranks 38th among the highest paid employees of Jeffco cities.

Beginning his career in 1991 with the Denver Police Department, Stephens has held various roles including heading the gang unit and participating in internal affairs, officer training, and hostage negotiations. He joined the Littleton Police Department in 2013 and has since expanded the force from 73 to 88 sworn officers, along with 34 professional staff.

Under his leadership, the department has achieved notable milestones, including three CALEA reaccreditations and the implementation of a comprehensive employee wellness program. Chief Stephens emphasized empowerment in his leadership style, stating, “supports the individual and the team while empowering them to achieve their goals.”

Reflecting on his time as Chief, he expressed gratitude for his experiences and community support, stating, “Littleton is truly an amazing place with a community that genuinely loves their police officers.”

The City of Littleton acknowledged Chief Stephens’s service, with City Manager Jim Becklenberg recognizing his established culture of professionalism in the department. As the city prepares for the recruitment of the next police chief, details will be shared in due course.
