Lakewood is set to unveil its first on-site solar energy system at the Charles Whitlock Recreation Center on January 22. The installation will fully offset the facility’s electricity usage, marking a significant step in the city’s sustainability efforts.
The solar project features a 494 kW system that utilizes both rooftop and parking canopy panels. It aims to reduce the city’s operating costs, minimize environmental impact, and provide protection for vehicles during storms.
The ribbon-cutting event will take place from 11 a.m. to noon at 1555 Dover St. Speakers will include members of the Lakewood City Council, representatives from the Sustainability and Community Development Department, a delegate from the Colorado Department of Local Affairs, and McKinstry Essention, the contractor responsible for the installation.
This project reflects Lakewood’s ongoing commitment to sustainability and is part of a broader initiative to modernize city buildings, enhance energy efficiency, and transition to renewable energy sources.
