Jefferson County is looking to position itself at the forefront of the digital economy by pursuing a global grant aimed at integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) into the local workforce.
In a briefing held on February 3, 2026, the Business Innovation & Technology (BIT) department, alongside the Housing, Employment and Economic Services (HEES) division, requested formal support from the Board of County Commissioners to apply for the “Activate AI: Economic Opportunity Challenge.”
The grant, hosted by data.org in partnership with Zoom, offers winners up to $115,000 in funding, plus significant in-kind technical assistance, including data science expertise, staff training, and software licenses.
If awarded, the funds will launch a pilot program designed to “upskill” both county employees and local businesses. The initiative aims to promote the safe and responsible use of AI to strengthen the regional economy.
Key components of the proposed program include:
- Curriculum Development: Partnering with Red Rocks Community College to create AI training courses.
- Operational Efficiency: Using AI to streamline county service navigation and eligibility processes.
- Business Support: Leveraging the Incumbent Worker program to help local employers adapt to emerging technologies.
County officials emphasized that the program carries no impact on the General Fund’s existing tax dollars. The $115,000 would be a one-time grant, with no requirement for a county match. While a provisional application was submitted in early January due to tight deadlines, staff are now seeking the Board’s official direction to move forward.
Even if the grant is not secured, BIT and HEES representatives noted that the county remains committed to AI education. However, without the “Activate AI” funding, officials warned the program would likely be scaled back and rely on more limited federal workforce funds.
Staff recommended that the Board authorize the acceptance of the funds if awarded, noting that the project aligns with the county’s broader goals of economic mobility and modernizing public services.
A decision on the budget supplemental to appropriate the funds is expected at a future hearing following the grant award announcement.
