The City of Wheat Ridge has secured over $4.5 million in state funding to enhance infrastructure for affordable housing near the Arvada Ridge G Line commuter rail station. This funding aims to expand housing options for residents close to public transit, jobs, and Red Rocks Community College.
The grant is part of Colorado’s Transit Oriented Communities Infrastructure (TOCI) program, which encourages housing development near transit hubs. Wheat Ridge was the first city in Colorado to complete the compliance report required to qualify for this funding, which is designed to address the state’s ongoing housing shortage.
The $4.5 million will support public improvements linked to the Ridge Road Infrastructure Project, ultimately paving the way for a 200-unit mixed-income housing development by Foothills Regional Housing. This site will also aid in the expansion of Red Rocks Community College’s nursing program, providing affordable living options for students near essential services.
“This funding helps us turn long-standing community goals into real, on-the-ground progress,” said Mayor Korey Stites. “By investing in infrastructure first, we are creating the conditions for housing that supports students, working families, and longtime residents, all in a location that makes sense near transit and education.”
Wheat Ridge’s project exemplifies a partnership between the city and Foothills Regional Housing, aimed at addressing housing needs while minimizing development in open spaces. Further information will be released as planning progresses.
