Golden-based Lunar Outpost has been chosen by NASA as one of two providers for a new lunar vehicle under its Lunar Terrain Vehicle Services contract. This selection highlights the Pegasus vehicle, designed to enhance astronaut mobility for upcoming lunar missions.
The Pegasus vehicle will support unrestricted movement for astronauts at the Moon’s South Pole, allowing for extensive exploration and operations. It is intended to assist with various missions such as site exploration, scientific operations, resource prospecting, and preparing for a permanent human presence on the Moon by 2030.
Justin Cyrus, CEO and Founder of Lunar Outpost, stated, “Pegasus gives Astronauts the range, reliability, and flexibility needed to thrive in new terrain as we identify and prepare the sites that will become the first permanent lunar outpost.”
The Pegasus is engineered to endure the Moon’s extreme conditions and can operate autonomously or with a crew, facilitating a range of mission types. The vehicle will also enable real-time livestreaming from the lunar surface, engaging scientists and the public in ongoing missions.
Lunar Outpost has developed Pegasus in collaboration with General Motors, Goodyear, and Leidos to address the challenges of space mobility. In addition, the company is planning nine upcoming missions to further support lunar exploration and infrastructure development.
