Lakewood-based Christy Sports, a leading outdoor rental and retail service provider, announced it will be closing all of its stores in New Mexico, following the conclusion of the 23/24 winter ski season. The company presently operates six stores in New Mexico, encompassing four in Taos Ski Valley and one each in downtown Taos and Santa Fe.
The decision to withdraw from the New Mexico market was reached as the firm aims to focus its investment in regions that are more profitable. Christy Sports stated that assessing and adjusting operations based on business performance is typical for a successful enterprise. The company added it recently opened new stores in Aspen and Telluride, Colorado, where market conditions are more amiable for growth.
“Christy Sports is focused on making decisions that are in the best interest of our overall company. We have loved serving guests in New Mexico the last five years. Unfortunately, we made the difficult decision to leave based solely on financial performance at no fault of the passion and effort of our employees and teams,” said Pete LaBore, CEO at Christy Sports.
Christy Sports took over the majority of its New Mexico locations in late 2018 from the Cottam’s family. The companies shared the same core values, focusing on offering top-quality products and outstanding customer service. “We have been so proud to continue the legacy established by these stores in service of the guests living in and visiting Taos and Santa Fe the last five years. We have made incredible friendships with the staff and will be supporting our employees through this transition,” said Dan Fox, Chief Operations Officer of Stores.
As part of the New Mexico store closure process, Christy Sports asserted that it will aid all full-time employees to find opportunities at other Christy Sports locations. The company will proceed with its standard transition for seasonal staff aligned with the end of the winter season. It was also noted that Bootdoctor’s remaining location in Telluride, Colorado will continue regular operations.
Christy Sports is presently in discussions with interested parties in the New Mexico market regarding the sale of the locations that are set to close. No further details are available at this time.
