Quantinuum, BMW Extend Quantum Computing Partnership

Jeffco-based Quantinuum and BMW Group have announced an expansion of their collaboration into a multi-year partnership aimed at enhancing future mobility through quantum computing applications in advanced materials science.

Since their initial joint research began in 2021, the companies have focused on addressing complex challenges in industrial chemistry to support sustainable mobility advancements. Their efforts have progressed from foundational research to detailed simulations of molecular systems, leading to insights into crucial aspects such as catalytic activity and material performance in energy-related environments.

This decision to extend their collaboration positions it as one of the longest-standing partnerships between a quantum computing provider and a commercial enterprise to date. “Quantinuum is focused on driving commercial adoption of quantum computing through close collaboration with industry leaders on high-impact applications,” said Dr. Rajeeb Hazra, President and CEO of Quantinuum.

As part of this agreement, BMW Group will utilize successive generations of Quantinuum’s quantum computing systems, including the current Helios system along with future developments planned for 2027 and 2029. Quantinuum’s work is also expected to enhance BMW’s research in catalyst chemistry aimed at improving energy efficiency and reducing costs. The collaboration has already achieved significant milestones, including the first simulation of catalytic performance using a quantum computer.
